I have been using a 56Kbps dial up connection for several years and had not experienced anything faster until Friday night…
I went to Westgate with my mother on Thursday morning to exchange a $25 MoneyGram Money Order that I had received from my friend, Bob. Unfortunately that money order could not be processed. Apparently it cannot be done here in South Africa though one could try depositing the international money order it into their bank account. Or so I am told by my aunt that works at a foreign exchange. Bob said that I shouldn’t worry about mailing the money order back to him. He said that I should just add $25 more worth of South African goodies to his “Thank you” package that I will be sending him for the gift he bought and will be sending out to me this Wednesday. I’m so excited about this gift and cant believe that I will be receiving it. More about that another time…
My father had asked my mother to purchase energy saving florescent light lamps that were on sale at Dion after I had been at my aunt’s place of work. I stopped by the cellular section to have a look at what there was on offer before heading to the lamps section with my mother. I saw that the Vodafone Mobile Connect USB Modem was on sale for R1899! This same modem is currently being sold at Vodashop for R2499.
We headed to my father’s shop after my mother purchased the sixty light lamps. I had to ask my father if he could lend R1900 to me so that I can purchase the modem the next day but he said no. So I decided to wait for the money I was to receive on what I thought would be Saturday…
I received €300 on Friday morning from Arno. Who is Arno? Well, you just might find out sometime soon in a post about him and my somewhat dark and freakish online activity that I practice. Anyway, after more than a month of waiting due to some restraints, Arno wired the money to my bank account on Thursday and my bank account was funded on Friday with just a little more than R3200.
I walked into Dion early that evening with a smile on my face thinking that I was going to buy the modem that I had been wanting for months, for R600 cheaper than Vodashop’s price. I make my way to the cellular section and have a look at the wall display units to see if the modem was still R1899. I called a salesperson over to ask if what I read was correct. “Yes, it is indeed R1399.” was her reply. Damn, I felt lucky as the price had dropped R500 overnight! So I purchased it and bought enough airtime for 2GB of data at Checkers on my way out of the mall.
I spent the rest of the night enjoying the experience of speeds way faster than those capable when using a 56Kbps dial up connection. I also helped my father change the light lamps in the house. Could you believe that sixty lamps aren’t enough?!
I also received the Gift of Flickr; a one year Flickr Pro account that night from one of my best friends, Chris. Who also happens to be writing a song dedicated to me! I can’t wait to hear it!
Could my weekend get any better?
EDIT: It just got better!

Nice! I have a phone with 3G so I just plug that into my laptop when I’m on the go, otherwise I use ADSL. 3G speeds are really decent though, sometimes better than ADSL. I used 56k for too many years, but now I can’t even remember what lag feels like.

Yeah, the speeds are really good and I’m loving it!
I’m glad your weekend just got better and better. You deserve it after all you’ve been thought with the ex this month. That is the cutest phone too! We just got broadband internet at home, i love the speed so much. But i cant wait until i get my laptop.
Pfft you lucky! I can’t believe you were using dial-up. I think I would have abandoned the Internet altogether if we hadn’t gotten DSL, and now the cable I have in my apartment.
I want to know why you get so many gifts…
sounds like you had a better weekend then me.. Glad someone’s was good
Woot! Watch out Internet, here comes Broadband Randi…
